The Pond

I had previously dug the pond in 1999, fed by its own small stream. The base is natural blue clay and the planting is deliberately left wild.

Reflections in the water are more important to me here than floating plants, although the wildlings always sneak in.

The water of the pond is for me about reflections of the surrounding countryside and the wild edges shelter wild life. A ‘pavement’ of rocks we put in on one side to enable us to get close to the water and observe smaller activity. Home to vast numbers of toads, look out for tiny baby ones, which can be found all over the garden.
