Hopeful Wood

A circle of trees, a semicircle of Hemerocallis and a small copse of ornamental trees on the far side. Steep stone steps go up to the Quarry and a sinuous path moves out through the copse. ‘Head Over Heels’ is a corten steel sculpture of cartwheelers  which dances over the seeding grasses in mid-summer.

A mown cruciform path, mirroring the cruciform slate path in the Bog Garden, dissects this place in spring to mid-summer. The quarters are planted with Narcissus, Fritillaria meleagris and varieties of Camassia. We allow the grasses to grow and seed before mowing the whole as a green circle. At the end of the path, between the Eucalyptus is a large rock placed there in memory of my aunt Dorothy Shand – but thereby hangs a tale of synchronicity…….along with extremely thoughtful winching and manipulating to move it from the bank beside the house. The cartwheeling sculpture forming the centrepiece is by the Bristol based sculptor Pete Moorhouse.
